MANILA – Former heavyweight champion Chris Byrd believes Ruslan Provodnikov can come up with a good fight against Manny Pacquiao should he be awarded the April 12 bout.
Byrd said the “Siberian Rocky” is capable of dishing all-out action fight in 12 rounds.
He said the fighting style has made Provodnikov one of the most exciting fighters today.
“Provodnikov, I call him the new boxing action hero, he brings the fire, he brings it till the end and he just keeps coming and fighting,” said Byrd in an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
Provodnikov, one of the front runners for an April 12 bout with Pacquiao, had monumental battles with Timothy Bradley and Mike Alvarado in 2013.
Byrd said he has no doubt the bruising Russian can also bring the same type of fight against Pacquiao.
“Provodnikov brings the fire. I think the crowd and all the people want to see Provodnikov-Pacquiao and see how that fight comes about,” he said.
Byrd, however, thinks the fighting congressman can still gain the upper hand if he refuses to succumb to Provodnikov’s constant pressure.
“If he can keep him (Provodnikov) off for 12 rounds, that can turn into a fight where Pacquiao can dominate,” said Byrd.
Byrd also noted that Pacquiao is craftier compared to the Russian slugger.
“He (Provodnikov) can play into Pacquiao’s hands also because now Pacquiao with the angles, being a lefty, combinations, and he still has some pop in his hands.”
