MANILA, Philippines – Petron Blaze will battle GlobalPort in the PBA Philippine Cup on Friday in a bid to get nearer the playoffs top seeding.
Coming off an 88-92 upset by Barako Bull Wednesday, the Boosters are facing heavy pressure after dropping three of their last four assignments.
Petron zoomed up to the team standings early in the tournament by stringing together 7 straight victories. Now, the Boosters are tied at second with Rain or Shine (8-3).
Petron, however, will face a victory-hungry GlobalPort, which lost all of its last four games.
The Batang Pier are in a fourway-tie at 6th place with Alaska, Meralco and San Mig Super Coffee (4-7) and will need to win games for a twice-to-beat bonus in the quarterfinals.
The clash is scheduled to take place at the Araneta Coliseum at 8 p.m.
At the 5:45 curtain raiser, Meralco will be squaring off against Alaska. Both teams will be fighting it out to boost their chances of reaching the top 8.
Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio said it will be survival mode for both teams.
“We couldn't afford to have a lackadaisical performance. We have the same win-loss mark. We are aware of the repercussions of the game,” he said in the league’s official website.
Alaska coach Luigi Trill, for his part, said they will need to put more emphasis on defense to control the Bolts.
“We need to be more consistent on the defensive end. Our defense is lacking. Sometimes we show up, sometimes we don’t,” said Trillo.
