MANILA, Philippines – The Barako Bull Energy booked a 92-88 upset of the Petron Blaze Boosters in the PBA Philippine Cup to earn their fifth win of the conference Wednesday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
JC Intal, Denok Miranda, Willie Miller, Dorian Pena and Rico Maeirhofer all came up with clutch baskets for Barako, who dealt the Blaze Boosters their third loss of the conference.
“As I’ve said, we will continue to make surprises,” Barako head coach Bong Ramos told PBA.ph. “We came out with different kinds of defenses and I have to thank our players for pushing themselves.”
An 8-0 run anchored by Intal, Pena and Miller allowed Barako to take the lead for good in the final period, and Intal put the nail on Petron’s coffin when he received a pass from Miranda for a slam dunk that made it 91-88 with 27.1 seconds left.
Petron still had a chance to tie the game, but Chris Lutz stepped on the line on what could have been a game-tying triple.
It was Barako’s first win over Petron in all-Filipino match-up since 2006.
The loss dropped Petron to 8-3, sending them to a share of second place with Rain or Shine and preventing them from tying Ginebra at the top of the league standings.
Pena top-scored for Barako Bull with 18 points, while Intal finished with 17 markers.
Lutz scored 17 points and Alex Cabagnot and Arwind Santos each fired 15 points for Petron, who are still playing without injured star center JunMar Fajardo.
Barako Bull is now at solo fifth place in the league standings with their 5-7 win-loss record.
