Donaire following Elorde's footsteps, not Pacquiao's
MANILA, Philippines – Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr., seen as the heir-apparent of Manny Pacquiao, is not following the Filipino superstar’s lead, according to boxing commentator Ronnie Nathanielsz.
If there’s one boxer Donaire is emulating, the analyst said, that’s the original “Flash,” the late Gabriel Elorde.
“Donaire wants to emulate Elorde, he wants to go up to junior lightweight,” Nathanielsz said in an interview with ANC last week.
The veteran analyst said Donaire idolized Elorde that he even watched the legend’s fight tapes to learn some of the Flash’s fighting style.
“In fact, he watched videos of Elorde at my home and he studied his style,” he said.
Elorde, former World Boxing Council and the World Boxing Association junior lightweight champion, is one of the best fighters ever produced by the Philippines.
He held the titles for seven years, the junior lightweight division record for longest title reign.
But Nathanielsz said Donaire credits Pacquiao for opening the doors for many Filipino for marquee fights.
“Even Nonito could see that Pacquiao is still the greatest,” he said.
