MANILA, Philippines – San Mig Coffee guard Mark Barroca credited their air-tight defense on LA Tenorio as the key to their win over Barangay Ginebra last Sunday.
Barroca keyed the Mixers’ 83-79 victory over the Gin Kings during their recent encounter in the PBA Philippine Cup, tallying 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals in that game.
But more importantly, Barroca was able to check Tenorio, who creates the most scoring opportunities for Ginebra.
“Sobrang galing kasi ni LA at sobrang utak na player. Marami siyang pwedeng gawin. Pwedeng umatake, pwedeng maging decoy. Kaya pinag-aralan ko talaga kilos niya,” Barroca said in an interview with Spin.ph’s Snow Badua.
By defending Tenorio, he said San Mig Coffee was able to break Barangay Ginebra’s offensive rhythm.
Tenorio was limited to just three assist, from an average of 8.5 per game.
“Yun ang point of attack nila. Sobrang galing ni LA pag nabibigyan ng ball screen. Kaya alam namin na pag magaling kami dumensa run, mako-contain namin sila,” said Barroca.
“Dun din kasi nagmumula ang pick and roll nila. Although marami rin silang pick and roll kagabi, marami ring nag-mintis na tira sila,” he added.
The victory improved San Mig Coffee’s record to 4-7, while dealing Ginebra’s second defeat in 11 games.
The Gin Kings, however, is still ahead of the pack in the team standings as Petron Blaze remained a win behind Ginebra with an 8-2 card.
