MANILA, Philippines – Veteran big man Danny Ildefonso showed that he still has what it takes to compete at a high level as he helped his new team, the Meralco Bolts, beat Air21 in a PBA Philippine Cup showdown last Saturday.
Ildefonso was coming off an injury-plagued season and had just four days of practice with the Bolts, but still showed off vintage form en route to 14 points, six rebounds, and five assists as Meralco won 92-88.
Ildefonso’s effort earned him the PBA Player of the Week award for the first week of January.
“He really believes that he’s not done yet,” Meralco head coach Ryan Gregorio said of the two-time PBA MVP. “And I’m giving him the opportunity and the stage to do it.”
In his 16th season in the PBA, Ildefonso not only outplayed his younger opponents, but also showed that he can mesh with his new teammates as he issued timely assists to Gary David, Jared Dillinger and John Wilson.
Ildefonso’s effort helped Meralco notch their fourth win of the conference, putting them in a logjam with four other teams for the fifth spot in the league standings.
