MANILA, Philippines – Rain or Shine's Jeff Chan has been named the PBA Player of the Week for the period of December 31 to January 6 after powering the Elasto Painters to the Philippine Cup Finals in their lone game last week.
In Game 6 of their best-of-seven series against the San Mig Coffee Mixers last Thursday, Chan exploded for 27 points as the Elasto Painters won 90-83, allowing them to close out the series and advance to the finals.
"Jeff has been working hard all year long," Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao told the league website. "He has emerged not only as the team’s top scorer but one of its leaders as well."
"Many think of him as an outside gunner, but he can score in many different ways. That makes him even more dangerous," Guiao said of Chan, who also had seven rebounds, three assists and a steal in Game 6.
Guiao pointed out that Chan is also able to "hold his own defense."
"That makes me very happy as his coach," he said.
But it was on the offensive end where Chan shone the most, especially in Game 6 as he bounced back from a three-point performance in Game 5.
In six games against the Mixers, Chan averaged 13.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.
The Elasto Painters will face the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters in the PBA Philippine Cup Finals, with Game 1 of the best-of-seven series taking place on January 9, Wednesday, at the Araneta Coliseum.
