MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao’s lawyer is calling on Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum to “free” the Filipino boxer for a historic mega-fight between the “Pacman” and American superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Lawyer Franklin “Jeng” Gacal Jr., Pacquiao’s lawyer, told Edwin Espejo of the Asian Correspondent that if Arum releases Pacquiao from his contractual obligations, then the highly anticipated mega-fight between the two pound-for-pound kings may finally happen.

“History is waiting and Bob should free Manny,” Gacal said. “That would be Bob’s greatest contribution to boxing history.”

Mayweather recently said a Pacquiao fight will not be impossible for as long as the Filipino is affiliated with Arum and Top Rank, with whom the American had a bitter falling out earlier in his career.

Pacquiao, for his part, said Mayweathr will have to wait until 2015 to fight him, which will be when his current contract with Top Rank expires.

“Kung ‘yun ang kundisyon niya at kung gusto ni Manny – at mukhang gusto ni Manny na labanan si Floyd – ang tanging paraan is no renewal of any contract with Bob Arum,” said Gacal. “Manny should be a freelancer for the fight to happen.”

Gacal also suggested that Arum could be paid a “step-aside fee” to give way for the fight.

“Floyd could agree to Manny hiring Bob on a contractual basis with a fixed fee,” he said.

Promotional issues have long been a major stumbling block to a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. The American deals exclusively with Golden Boy Promotions, and last year signed a lucrative six-fight deal with the Showtime network.

Pacquiao, meanwhile, has long been affiliated with Arum and Top Rank, and most of his fights appear on the rival HBO network.
