MANILA, Philippines – Petron swingman Marcio Lassiter is hopeful the Blaze Boosters will get off to a good start in 2014 even as they continue to play without the services of big man JunMar Fajardo, who is still out due to injury.
Petron had lost two straight to Rain or Shine and Ginebra, but in their last game of 2013, the Blaze Boosters routed the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters, 105-91, to snap the brief losing streak and keep in step with league-leading Gin Kings.
“You always want to end on a good note, and we did just that,” Lassiter told PBA.ph. “We just want to continue to build on that and make sure that we stay aggressive, stay true to the game and play defense.”
“That’s what we are doing and that’s what wins championships. We’ll continue to build, grow, learn, and play together,” he added. “And if we continue to do that, we also hope to start this new year on a good note.”
It was Lassiter who led the way for Petron against TNT, firing a team-high 22 points and making three of six attempts from beyond the arc.
“I just stayed aggressive the whole game. JunMar is obviously a huge presence for us, and we count a lot on him. But the difference in (the TNT game) compared to the last game is that we learned to adjust and we knew what our attacks will be,” he said.
Lassiter also stressed that even without Fajardo, Petron remains a very capable team.
“We’re deep,” he said. “We can put up a lot of points, and we still play the same system that we do despite not having JunMar.”
Petron will next play the Barako Bull Energy Cola on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
