MANILA, Philippines – With his sights set on climbing the featherweight ranks, four-division world champion Nonito Donaire Jr. is working on to put more weight.
Although Donaire doesn’t plan to jump to the 126-pound class until the latter part of 2013, the “Filipino Flash” said he’s already experimenting with weight lifting.
“[I’d] probably start a little bit of weight lifting and then a month after do my cardio and box,” Donaire told Boxing Scene’s Ronnie Nathanielsz.
Donaire said he wants to know if he’ll be comfortable moving around with the added bulk.
But before make his climb to the featherweight division, Donaire said he wants to have a title unification bouts against World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight champion Abner Mares and World Boxing Association (WBA) title holder Guillermo Rigondeaux.
Donaire said he’d like his promoter, Bob Arum, “to make the [Mares] fight happen in April."
He added that he’s open to fight Rigondeaux in March.
