MANILA, Philippines – World super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire will ask Cuban champion Guillermo Rigondeaux to undergo random drug testing if they are ever to meet inside the ring this year.
In an interview with Dennis Guillermo of Examiner, Donaire said if Rigondeaux wants to fight him, then he will ask the Cuban to agree to random drug testing.
“I would like to do that, especially because people have been asking for it. Random is good, so we can help clean boxing’s reputation,” Donaire said.
Donaire is the first and only boxer to undergo year-round random drug testing, which is conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency.
“If they want to request me to fight them, then I have a request for them to fight fair. It’s an even trade,” Donaire said.
Rigondeaux has been asking for a fight against Donaire for some time now, although “The Filipino Flash” has repeatedly said the former Olympic gold medalist was not deserving of a fight against him.
Donaire has instead asked his promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, to try and make a fight with Abner Mares, who is promoted by Golden Boy.
A fight with Rigondeaux will be more likely, however, as both are promoted by Top Rank.
In his four fights in 2012, Donaire did not require his opponents to undergo random drug testing.
