Lingayen chess tourney set

MANILA, Philippines – The Lingayen Open Chess Tournament, dubbed as the Mayor Josefina Castaneda Chess Cup, gets underway on January 5 and 6 at the Lingayen Municipal Hall in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

Pangasinan Chess Federation president Juan Sison and Lingayen Chess Club official Tom Ferrer with Mayor Josefina Castaneda will grace the opening ceremonies.

The Open category champion of the event will receive P4,000, while the under-12 and under-16 category champions will receive P2,000.

In December 2012, Grand Master John Paul Gomez took the 4th Gov. Amado T. Espino Jr. Open Chess Cup title after finishing the tournament with six points.

Gomez was undefeated in the field with 94 participants, including nine national masters, two Fide masters (FM), two international masters and two grand masters.

Pangasinan’s FM Haridas Pascua also collected six points over seven rounds, but had to concede because of a lower tie-break score.
