Jardeleza, 62, served for a long time as counsel of food and beverage giant San Miguel Corp. (SMC).
Jardeleza also served as senior vice president of SMC.
Jardeleza left SMC to become deputy Ombudsman for Luzon, which he held for a year starting 2011, before he became Solicitor General.
His links to SMC dogged him, however, until his appointment as chief government lawyer.
He was opposed by some coconut farmers’ groups because of his close association with Cojuangco.
Jardeleza earned a Political Science degree from UP Iloilo. He took up law at UP where he graduated cum laude. He took his master’s degree at Harvard Law School.
He passed the Philippine Bar in 1975, placing third with a grade of 88.35%.
