Villanueva, 56, is former dean of the Ateneo de Manila Law School, succeeding constitutionalist Fr. Joaquin Bernas.
He holds a Commerce degree major in Accountancy from the Holy Angel University in Pampanga.
He graduated valedictorian and cum laude from Ateneo Law school. He placed second in the 1982 Bar, with a grade of 90.15%. He took the CPA Board Exam that same year and placed 6th.
He obtained a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School in 1989. In October 2005, he was conferred a Diplomate in Juridical Science by the San Beda College.
Villanueva is also currently the Chairman of the Commercial Law Department and a member of the Academic Council and Consultants’ Group of the Philippine Judicial Academy, the educational arm of the Supreme Court.
He was once legal consultant of the Export Processing Zone Authority from 1985 -1986 and People’s Television Network from 1992 to 1999.
He vied for an SC justice post in 2008 and 2010.
