MANILA - The Commission on Audit (COA) is set to suspend its conduct of special audit investigations into government officials' use of public funds during the official election period.
Speaking on ANC's Talkback, COA Chairperson Michael Aguinaldo said the audit body established a cut-off date for the filing of audit investigation against officials to avoid being used for political purposes.
The cut-off date was on the first day of filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs), Aguinaldo said.
"We decided we will not accept or we will not proceed with special audits that are filed beginning that date forward, but we will accept them after the election is done," he said.
But Aguinaldo clarified that audit investigations against officials that are already existing before the filing of COC would still continue.
"If it has started already before the first day of filing of certificate of candidacy, meaning there is an ongoing investigation, that will continue. Anything new will have to wait until after the election," he said.
Aguinaldo added the COA shall resume and conduct new special audit investigations after the elections.
"After the election, if whoever files that request or makes that complaint wants to continue, then fine we can continue..and this is done actually every time there is an election to avoid it being used for political purposes," he said.
