MANILA, Philippines – Team UAAP-Philippines dominated Singapore, 25-12, 25-9 and 25-11, Saturday night in the women's volleyball competition of the 17th ASEAN University Games in Palembang, Indonesia to forge a bronze medal showdown against Malaysia.
Alyssa Valdez, the reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player, had three service aces to finish with 11 points, while Bea de Leon scored all but one of her 10 points off attacks for the Filipina spikers.
Ella de Jesus added eight hits, while Aerieal Patnongon had two blocks for a six-point outing. Michelle Morente also scored six points for Team UAAP-PH, which is composed of the Ateneo Lady Eagles players.
The bronze medal match between the Filipinas and the Malaysians will be played Sunday at 2 p.m., Manila time. Team UAAP-PH defeated Malaysia in their opener last Monday.
The Filipina spikers finished the preliminaries with a 2-2 record, losing to eventual finalists Thailand and Indonesia.
Team UAAP-PH is hoping to give the country its first podium finish in international women's volleyball play since winning a bronze medal in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games in Bacolod.
As of Saturday, the Filipino student-athletes have tallied a four-gold, four-silver, and three-bronze medal haul, all of which came from taekwondo.
