MANILA, Philippines - Globe Telecom on Thursday said the Bureau of Customs has lifted its suspension on the accreditation of the telecommunication company as an importer.
The BOC's decision, issued by Customs Deputy Commissioner Agaton Teodoro Uvero, paves the way for Globe to restore its import activities.
"We welcome the Bureau of Customs' decision lifting the suspension order on Globe. The previous suspension was merely a misinterpretation of our brokers of the rules with regard to the filing of application of import permits,” said Atty. Froilan Castelo, Globe General Legal Counsel.
Last week, the BOC suspended the accreditation of 70 companies and 45 customs brokers over repeated violation of Customs policies and procedures in filing import documents. The BOC suspended these companies and brokers for non-compliance with its policies on disclosure of detailed product descriptions for goods imported.
Globe's broker REQ Brokerage was one of the 45 brokers, whose accreditation was suspended by the BOC last week.
Castelo said the suspension was due to a misinterpretation of the rules by its brokers.
The BOC requires brokers to describe imports in detail, but the online form provides limited number of characters (26 characters) to describe the goods imported.
Castelo said Globe usually provides supporting documents as attachments to the online form.
Castelo said all importations of telecom equipment, parts and accessories pass through the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) for the issuance of certificate of import and permit to purchase with supporting documents itemizing all goods to be imported.
As a major importer of telecommunication equipment, parts and accessories, Globe had received commendations from the BOC. Last year, Globe was commended by the BOC for being the Top 16th importer contributing P2 billion to its coffers.
