MANILA -- Alleged rice smuggling king Davidson Bangayan has been discharged from the Laoag City General Hospital in Ilocos Norte, the hospital director confirmed on Tuesday.
Laoag City General Hospital director Dr. Francis Dacuycuy said Bangayan was discharged at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
He said it was Bangayan himself who requested that he be released from the hospital already.
The patient was discharged after medical tests showed that his condition had gotten better, Dacuycuy said.
He said he has notified the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and other concerned law enforcement agencies regarding Bangayan's hospitalization.
But he said he is not aware if Bangayan is still staying in Laoag.
Dacuycuy earlier said that Bangayan was admitted in the hospital on Sunday for diarrhea and backache.
He underwent several tests, and results showed that he was suffering from acute lumbar sprain and hypertensive cardiovascular disease.
He was supposed to attend a Senate hearing on Monday but failed to make it after he was hospitalized.
Bangayan, who some believe is rice smuggler David Tan, was already slapped with contempt by the Senate during the previous hearing.
Senator Juan Ponce Enrile said Bangayan had submitted documents to a local court proving that he is David Tan, but the latter denied the allegation.
He is out of detention after paying bail in a power pilferage case filed earlier by the Department of Justice (DOJ). -- Report from Denis Agcaoli, ABS-CBN News Ilocos Norte
