MANILA - Malacañang on Thursday rejected anew allegations that President Aquino is behind moves in Congress to amend the economic provisions of the Constitution that restrict foreign ownership.
Communications Secretary Sonny Coloma said the President has already made clear in his previous statements that he does not see the need for Charter change.
"Malinaw at matibay ang posisyon ng Pangulo na hindi kailangan at hindi prayoridad ang pagbabago ng saligang batas. Walang batayan ang alegasyon na iyan," he said.
Speaker Feliciano Belmonte, a known ally of the President, is the principal author of Resolution No. 1, which seeks to introduce the phrase "unless otherwise provided by law" in constitutional provisions that restrict foreign ownership of land and businesses.
Belmonte said this would enable Congress to lift such restrictions when needed.
