MANILA -- The government has started the construction of earthquake-proof, mid-rise buildings for informal settlers in danger zones along the Estero de San Miguel in Manila.
According to Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Mar Roxas, about 557 families will benefit from the project.
Under the "People's Plan" project, poor families will only pay a maximum of P1,000 per month as rent.
If the family cannot afford this amount, they can pay only P300 a month.
The DILG said the buildings are designed to survive a magnitude 7.0 quake in Metro Manila. -- report from Edwin Sevidal, dzMM
