Highly rated NFL prospect Michael Sam, who played collegiate football for the University of Missouri, has announced he is gay.
The star college football player came out in interviews with ESPN and the New York Times.
Sam said he had already confided to a few friends and teammates at the university, and had already dated a fellow athlete who was not a football player.
If he gets into the NFL, Sam could be the league’s openly gay player.
He took to Twitter after his interview aired to thank his supporters.
NBA center Jason Collins, known for being the first major U.S. sport athlete to come out, also tweeted his support. Some NFL players also supported Sam’s coming out, but others were worried about his prospects in the draft.
In a statement, the NFL said it admires Sam’s honesty and courage, adding that any player with ability and determination can succeed in the league. -- ANC Alerts, February 10, 2014.
