MANILA - Messages of support for actor-host Vhong Navarro flooded social media Friday amid news that he was beaten up inside a condominium unit in Taguig, making his name the top trending topic worldwide on micro-blogging site Twitter.
The incident occurred Wednesday at a Fort Bonifacio condominium, after a female friend of the actor invited him to come over, Navarro's manager Chito Rono confirmed with ABS-CBN News Friday night through a statement.
According to Rono, Navarro was tied up, blindfolded, and attacked by a group of men, who also extorted money from the actor. Navarro's injuries, Rono added, left him unable to speak properly, with the possibility of undergoing an operation.
Shortly after ABS-CBN News reported the incident on Friday night, Navarro's "It's Showtime" co-host Vice Ganda took to Twitter to air his sentiment about his colleague's condition, before posting the hashtag "#PrayForVhongNavarro."
The term was picked up by several of Vice Ganda's 3.4 million followers, quickly making it a trending topic in the Philippines as early as 8:15 p.m.
A subsequent report by ABS-CBN News showing exclusive photos of Navarro's beaten face, sent in by the actor himself, made the rounds on social media, pushing "#PrayForVhongNavarro" to rank, at one point, as the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter worldwide.
