MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao may end up having another Brandon Rios as his foe if Ruslan Provodnikov wins the Pacquiao sweepstakes.
According to boxing trainer Vince Parra, the “Siberian Rocky” is perfectly suited to Pacquiao’s fighting style.
“Ruslan is a real tough guy, you know he's the Russian Rocky. But Pacquiao right now, that guy's style is tailor made for him,” Parra, who worked with Filipino boxer Mercito Gesta, told Hustle Boss.
Parra said Provodnikov is the type of fighter who rushes towards his opponents. He said this plays perfectly in the hands of a craftier Pacquiao.
The Russian is one of the two candidate foes for the fighting congressman who is due for a ring return on April 12. The other option for Pacquiao is WBO welterweight champion timothy Bradley.
“if that fight happens it will be a great action fight for fans because you have a guy who comes forward and a master boxer, a really good boxer in Manny Pacquiao who looks to be a 100% back now,” Parra said, referring to the Filipino’s shutout victory over Rios.
Parra said the only way Provodnikov can win against Pacquiao is to do a Marquez.
“I don't give Ruslan too much of a chance on beating Manny Pacquiao,” said the trainer. “He may be able to catch some of the magic that Marquez did but from outside in, Manny runs away with it.”
Boxing promoter Bob Arum earlier said he’ll be meeting Pacquiao’s representative, Michael Koncz, this weekend to discuss the boxer’s next bout.
Arum might come out with a formal announcement of the fight next week.
