MANILA - A Japanese resident of the Philippines was abducted by gunmen over the weekend in Metro Manila and abductors are seeking P5 million ($113,000) in ransom, police said Monday.
Hayato Sumi, 41, was accosted Saturday night at his used bicycle shop in Don Bosco, a village in Paranaque City, by two men who gagged and blindfolded him before dragging him into a car and driving off with him, they said.
The police said at least four people were involved in the abduction.
Sumi, from Kanagawa Prefecture near Tokyo, has been living in the Philippines since 2009 and is married to a Filipina.
A relative was said to have received a phone call demanding a ransom of 5 million pesos.
