MANILA -- Marlon de Leon's two-year-old son was finally laid to rest a day after he ran away with the boy's body from the hospital due to lack of money.
The story of De Leon was first shared on radio dzMM Wednesday midnight after he was noticed by reporter Zandro Ochona sitting at a roadside in Tayuman, Manila.
The father was carrying his son's body, which was covered in red cloth.
The boy, Kevin, reportedly died of dehydration after suffering from vomiting and diarrhea since Monday. He died at a hospital in Malabon.
According to De Leon, he decided to steal his son's body from the hospital since he lacked money to pay the hospital expenses. He also feared that his son's body might be used instead by medical students.
He said all he wanted was for Kevin to have a proper burial.
With the help of the Department of Health (DOH), De Leon brought his son to Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center for the processing of the remains.
The city government of Manila, meanwhile, decided to shoulder the burial expenses of his son.
The remains of Kevin were laid to rest at the Manila North Cemetery.
Kevin was the youngest among De Leon's three children.
De Leon said his two other kids are currently staying with his former live-in partner. -- Report from Zandro Ochona, dzMM
