MANILA, Philippines – The Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws made short work of a sluggish University of the Philippines (UP) squad in notching their second victory in the UAAP Season 76 women’s volleyball tournament Wednesday at the San Juan Arena.
After losing to Ateneo in three sets last Saturday, the Lady Tams rebounded with a straight-sets victory of their own, easily cruising past UP, 25-19, 25-18, and 25-17.
Bernadeth Pons had a breakout game, Toni Basas gave FEU a boost off the bench, and Gyzelle Sy did a masterful job in setting as the Lady Tamaraws hiked their record to 2-1.
“Sobrang hirap ng pagkatalo namin sa Ateneo, na-down ang team namin,” admitted sophomore Remy Palma, who also had a solid outing. “Sabi lang ni Coach, bawi tayo.”
Sy set the tone of the match early when she started Set 1 with back-to-back service aces, and the UP floor defense never got into a rhythm all throughout the game as they struggled to dig up even routine spikes from FEU.
UP’s blocking, which was a highlight of their five-set loss against Adamson last weekend, was also out of sync, and the Lady Tams were able to repeatedly power through the Lady Maroons’ net defense.
In all three sets, the Lady Maroons were able to keep in step up until the first technical timeout, at which point the Lady Tamaraws pulled away.
In the second set, UP was able to come as close as three points, 16-19, but Basas’ entry into the game re-energized the Lady Tamaraws and they ended the set on a 6-2 run as UP again succumbed to errors.
The Lady Maroons briefly took a 7-6 lead in the third set, and then tie the frame at 11-all, but Palma, Basas and Pons took turns scoring for the Lady Tams and the Lady Maroons never threatened again.
