MANILA, Philippines – Bob Arum’s Top Rank promotions should get some of the blame over the fight that erupted between the camps of Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios, according to a boxing analyst.
Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole said in his blog that Arum’s outfit did not take the necessary steps to prevent the scuffle given the animosity between Freddie Roach, his former team mate Alex Ariza and Rios’ coach Robert Garcia.
“This was an entirely predictable and preventable occurrence that happened only because no one took the simple steps required to stop it,” said Iole. “That falls totally on the shoulders of the promoter, Top Rank.”
Iole pointed out that the bitterness between Roach and his former assistant was well known to boxing insiders, and has been well documented, especially after Ariza got fired from Team Pacquiao.
He also cited that Roach still has hatred toward Rios and his trainer for the 2010 video where they made fun of Roach’s Parkinson’s disease.
“Allowing Roach and Ariza to cross paths without taking steps to prevent an incident is akin to allowing it to happen,” said the boxing analyst. “The ugly scenario that unfolded could have been avoided had officials from Top Rank taken charge and anticipated that something could happen.”
Roach came to blows against Garcia and Ariza on Wednesday when they argued over their boxers' training time in the gym.
