LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Proud Filipina fighter Gina Iniong is pleased over her recent victory against visiting American Nathalie Heidel.
Iniong set the record of being the first Filipina to fight and win in an international MMA outfit by halting her American counterpart in Pacific X-treme Combat 41 over the weekend.
“Masyang masaya ako kasi ako yung unang Pilipinang nanalo sa MMA,” Iniong told ABS-CBNnews.com during the media visit at the Team Lakay Gym in Benguet on Monday.
Iniong has already fought in MMA twice locally before trying her luck in PXC.
But she wasn’t simply lucky in her PXC debut as she thoroughly dominated her American foe, who fell down after being caught with a big right hand in the first round. Iniong pounded away until the referee stepped in to stop the carnage.
The 24-year-old said she tried her hand in boxing when she was still in high school.
“Tatlong taon po akong nagte-train ng MMA. Noong high school po ako, nagsimula po akong magtrain ng boxing,” said Iniong. “Mahilig po kasi talaga ako sa combat sports. Pero hindi naman po ako naghahanap ng away.”
Iniong looks up to MMA-fighter-turned-action-star Gina Carano as one of her idols.
