MANILA, Philippines – A tough United Arab Emirates (UAE) side shut out the Philippines Azkals, 4-0, during their friendly game at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
Without some of its Filipino-European superstars, the Philippine team was forced to put up a gritty stand against the reigning Gulf Cup of Nations champion.
The nationals, however, failed to match the offensive mindset of UAE, which posted a 2-0 first half lead courtesy of Hasem Musalam and Walid Abbas.
Ismaeil Matar and Ali Mabkhout then closed out the Azkals in the second half with another pair of goals for UAE.
The Azkals played minus Fil-German Stephan Schrock, Fil-Danish Dennis Cagara and Fil-Brit keeper Neil Etheridge.
The game served as a test for the Azkals who are building up for the 2014 Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup.
Team manager Dan Palami found it fit to force the nationals against a higher level-team to improve their game.
UAE is ranked 71st in the world, 66 places higher than the Philippines.
