MANILA (UPDATE) – Three people have died due to typhoon "Yolanda," according to initial reports on the effects of the strongest typhoon to form in the world this year.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) spokesperson Rey Balido said two people got electrocuted in Masbate and Surigao del Sur.
The victim in Surigao del Sur was 66-year-old Lingig town fisherman Jimmy Cabilan, who accidentally stepped into a puddle of water that was electrified by a live wire.
The victim in Masbate was 15-year-old Enex Deinla.
The third fatality, identified as Regie Francisco Bucoy, was struck by lightning in Zamboanga City.
Authorities expect these figures to go up, as the full extent of the effects of the typhoon has yet to be assessed.
At least 7 people have been injured.
The NDRRMC, in its 6 a.m. update, said a total of 26,675 families or 125,604 persons were evacuated pre-emptively to 109 evacuation centers in 22 provinces, 13 cities, 73 municipalities in Regions IV-B, V, VI, VII, VIII, X, and CARAGA.
A total of 2,087 passengers, 50 vessels, 557 rolling cargoes and 54 motorboats were stranded in Region IV-A, IV-B, V, VI, VII, and VIII.
As of November 7, power interruption was being experienced in the following municipalities in Regions IV-B and VIII: San Franciso, Camotes Cebu Torijos and Buenavista, Marinduque.
Yolanda damaged houses and structures, toppled trees, and knocked down electric posts in areas in the typhoon's path.
PAGASA said Yolanda made landfall over Guiuan, Eastern Samar at 4:40 a.m. It made a second landfall over Tolosa, Leyte at 7 a.m.
The third landfall was recorded at 9:40 a.m. in Daanbantayan, Cebu, and the fourth one was in Bantayan Island, Cebu at 10:40 a.m.
As of 12 noon, Yolanda was over the vicinity of Concepcion, Iloilo.
Yolanda is forecast to move west northwest at 40 kph. It was already in the vicinity of northern tip of Cebu as of 11 a.m. and will traverse Visayan Sea and then hit Panay Island between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.
The typhoon will then pass by the southern part of Mindoro and Busuanga, Palawan. It will exit the Philippine landmass Friday evening towards the West Philippine Sea.
