MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine national women’s basketball team kicked off their FIBA Asia Championship campaign by routing Hong Kong, 87-57, yesterday in Bangkok, Thailand.
Analyn Almazan led all scorers after scoring 22 points, while Merenciana Arayi added 14 points, and Fria Bernardo scored 12.
Perlas Pilipinas opened a 23-19 lead after the opening frame then seized control in the second quarter, eventually leading by as much as 31 points.
“The aim is to take a serious shot at Level 1 qualifying, and we know we need to win as many games as possible to achieve that,” Perlas head coach Haydee Ong said.
The top three teams in the FIBA Asia Championships for Women will earn berths to the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women to be held in Turkey next year.
Perlas shot 53% from the field against Hong Kong, and assisted on 25 of their 36 field goals.
Chu Hau Yee and Law Lai Yi both had 11 points for Hong Kong.
