MANILA - Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto on Wednesday said he is eyeing a possible review of the charter of the Social Security System (SS) in order to establish some safety nets against abuses.
This is in light of the huge bonuses that executives and employees of the SSS have received, which has recently drawn controversy.
"Ang dapat lagi i-review are not only the bonuses, but also the charter of this institution" Recto said.
"Dapat ba may limitations? Dapat tingnan iyan."
Recto declined to comment further on the propriety of the impending large bonuses that will be distributed among the top officials of the agency.
"All of us should show sensitivity," he said.
He said an agency such as the SSS should also be competitive in terms of people they employ. But Recto also emphasized the need to professionalize further the mandate and operational system of SSS.
Bayan Muna party-list earlier scored the bonuses given to SSS officials and the pension fund’s plan to increase the premiums of members.
Previous reports said SSS board members had been given about P10 million performance-based bonus based on an incentive system covering state-run corporations.
Key SSS officials reportedly received bonuses ranging fro P968,000 to P1.4 million. With The Philippine Star
