Petron Blaze’s Alex Cabagnot and San Mig Coffee’s James Yap
MANILA, Philippines – San Mig Coffee’s James Yap and Petron Blaze’s Alex Cabagnot shared the Player of the Week plum for towing their respective teams to the PBA Governors’ Cup Finals.
Yap and Cabagnot were chosen as co-awardees for the period September 30 to October 7, according to the league website.
Cabagnot averaged 15.5 points, 5.25 rebounds and 4.25 assists per game while leading the Boosters in their semifinals joust against erstwhile champion Rain or Shine.
Yap, on the other hand, tallied an average of 15.0 points per game to go with his 5.3 rebounds per outing against Meralco.
San Mig Coffee’s Alex Mallari and Petron’s Marcio Lassiter were also strong candidates for the awards for their roles in their respective teams.
Maliksi came off the bench and sowed 23 points against Meralco last Friday, while Lassiter peppered Rain or Shine with 27 points and 12 rebounds last Monday.
However, Cabagnot and Yap were chosen due to their consistent performance.
“I think everyone rates James’ game based on whether he is scoring, but he is bringing a lot more to the table than just that,” said Mixers’ coach Tim Cone. “His devotion to the defensive side and on the boards has really taken our ‘team’ basketball to another level.”
Cabagnot also gained praise from Boosters coach Gee Abanilla.
“Alex has taken it upon himself to be the leader of this team and I’m happy for him,” said Abanilla. “He’s now more of a table-setter for his teammates, picking his spots and basically becoming more efficient as a result.”
