MANILA – The mayor and a councilor of Norzagaray, Bulacan were disqualified by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) First Division for vote-buying in the May 2013 elections.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes identified the disqualified officials as Norzagaray Mayor Alfredo Germar and Councilor Rogelio Santos Jr.
Comelec found evidence showing that Germar’s party distributed sample ballots with P500 and P1,000 bills.
Around P800,000 cash was also recovered from the party’s headquarters, which authorities suspect was used to buy votes.
Comelec also disqualified Roberto Esquivel, who ran as vice mayor of Norazagaray, but lost in his bid.
Comelec said Germar and Santos may still file a motion for reconsideration before the Comelec en banc. -- Report from Zhander Cayabyab, dzMM
