MANILA, Philippines -- The Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates and the Adamson Baby Falcons outplayed separate foes to formally clinch semifinal berths in their respective divisions in the 11th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament last Sunday.
Allyn Malabanan and Guy Essono made 15 and 12 points for the Pirates, who blasted the University of the East Warriors, 69-58, in the senior action at the St. Placid gymnasium of the San Beda College-Manila campus in Mendiola.
Jimmy Pasturan tallied 20 points, while Jaydee Tungcab and Dave Cabanilla turned in 15 points for the Baby Falcons, who demolished the San Beda Red Cubs, 86-62 , in the junior division.
The Pirates finished their Group A assignment with a 7-1 win-loss record and made it to the semis with the Ateneo Blue Eagles (6-1).
The Baby Falcons swept their eight-game Group B stint, and they earned a semis seat in Group B with the Red Cubs (6-1).
In other matches, the Arellano Chiefs drew 23 points from Jeriz Ruiz as they won over the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers, 67-58.
Nelson Polendey hacked out 16 as the San Benildo Blazing Wolves won over La Salle-Zobel, 82-58.
Commissioner Robert de la Rosa said they are still awaiting the outcome of the San Beda Red Lions’ match with the Letran Knights on Saturday to determine the semis qualifiers in Group B of the seniors division.
The Red Lions have a 5-2 win-loss record.
De la Rosa said that with the possibility of a five-way tie in the lead with the University of Perpetual Help Altas, the Enderun Titans, National University Bulldogs and the La Salle Green Archers at 6-2, the quotient system will be used to determine the two qualifiers in Group B.
He said the squads with the best records will make it.
