MANILA, Philippines – San Beda’s veteran guard Rome dela Rosa copped the NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week award after stepping up in crunch time to power the Red Lions to back-to-back wins in the Season 89 men’s basketball tournament.
Dela Rosa conspired with teammate Arthur dela Cruz to bail the Red Lions out against a gritty University of Perpetual Help team, 78-76, in overtime.
Dela Rosa assisted Dela Cruz on the game-winning basket to finish with 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Against San Sebastian, Dela Cruz returned the favor as he issued the assist to Dela Rosa that gave San Beda a 69-68 cushion with 56 seconds remaining, enough for them to keep the lead and clinch a 72-68 victory.
“I can’t ask for more from Rome,” said San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez. “He’s really playing well. All of them (are). I’m very thankful that they have that trust in the coaching staff and in the system.”
Dela Rosa wound up with 18 points, three rebounds, one assist and two steals in their game against the Stags.
The 22-year-old Dela Rosa, a graduating marketing student, attributed his pair of A-games to the extra work that he has put in during their practices.
“I’ve been working hard. You’re not always gonna have a great season, so I keep pushing,” he said. “This is good timing, going into the stretch of the season.”
San Beda’s twin victories last week hiked their record to 13-2, tightening their grip onto the top spot in the NCAA standings.
Dela Rosa beat out teammate Ola Adeogun, Letran’s Raymund Almazan, Lyceum’s Mark Francisco and EAC’s Jolas Paguia for the weekly award.
