MANILA, Philippines – Filipino Grand Masters (GMs) Darwin Laylo and Richard Bitoon rebounded with victories over their respective rivals in the second round of the 2013 Battle of the Grand Masters Chess Championships at the Philippine Sports Commission conference room on Monday.
Laylo, who lost to GM John Paul Gomez in the first round on Sunday, defeated Fide Master (FM) Jony Habla to score a full point.
Gomez remains the solo leader in the tournament with 2.0 pints after winning by default over International Master (IM) Emmanuel Senador.
Meanwhile, Bitoon stunned GM Eugene Torre to match the output of Laylo and six others, including GMs Mark Paragua, Oliver Barbosa and Rogelio Barcenilla, as well as IM Richilieu Salcedo III.
Twelve-time National Open champion GM Rogelio Antonio Jr. gained a share of second place with 1.5 points.
Antonio drew with GM Barcenilla in the first round, then defeated National Master (NM) Narquinden Reyes in the second round.
Paragua, meanwhile, drew with GM Barbosa and FM Roderick Nava, in order.
In the women’s division, IM Janelle Mae Frayna and Beverly Mendoza are leading the way with perfect 2.0 points.
Frayna, the top player of the Far Eastern University defeated Gladys Hazelle Romeo and FM Cherry Ann Mejia, while Mendoza crushed Ynna Sophia Canape and NM Jedara Docena. -- By Marlon Bernardino
