MANILA, Philippines – Fide Master (FM) Hamed Nouri of the Philippines defeated FM Tsang Hon Ki of Hong Kong to claim solo second spot after six rounds of competition in the 2013 Hong Kong International Open Chess Championship.
Nouri now has 5.0 points, half a point behind the solo leader, top-seeded International Master (IM) Marcos Llaneza Vega of Spain, who has 5.5 points.
Vega beat National Master (NM) Roel Abelgas of the Philippines in their sixth-round encounter.
Abelgas has 4.5 points, the same output of FM Deniel Causo of the Philippines, Li Bo of China, and Daniel Lam of Hong Kong.
NM Nelson Villanueva and FM Marie Antoinette San Diego are in joint seventh place along with four other players, while seven-year-old Alekhine Nouri, the world’s youngest FM, has 2.0 points.
The Filipinos’ campaign in the Hong Kong tournament is supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee. -- By Marlon Bernardino
