MANILA, Philippines – Fifty houses made of light materials were razed to the ground after a fire broke out in Barangay Talon-Talon in Zamboanga last Saturday night.
One of the residents, Abnasser Ladja, said that allegedly, an unidentified person lobbed what was suspected to be an explosive in the area. Eyewitnesses said the explosion led to a fire that quickly spread to other houses.
There were no injuries reported during the incident.
The area had been earlier placed under forced evacuation since it is located a few meters from a mangrove area where members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) are believed to be hiding.
The initial damage to property from the fire is pegged at P200, 000, according to fire superintendent Dominador Zabala.
The cause of the fire remains unclear but many residents connect it to the ongoing conflict in Zamboanga.
