This will not cow us into silence - COA
MANILA (3rd UPDATE) – Shots were fired at the main office of the Commission on Audit (COA) along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City on Wednesday morning, police said.
Quezon City Police District Senior Superintendent Richard Albano said two bullet slugs were recovered in the office of COA Assistant Director Nilda Plaras.
"Iyung mga nandoon sa kabila, mga 6 'o clock, may narinig na apat na putok. So ang nangyari nito, ang impression natin, may dumaan at pinaputukan ang building," he told ANC.
Albano said the incident was reported to them at around 8:30 a.m. Upon arrival at the scene, police discovered that the glass windows of the office of Plaras were shattered.
Albano said they will check if the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera along Commonwealth Avenue captured the gunmen. He added that the police already have a witness who will help in the investigation.
In a statement, COA chief Grace Pulido Tan said they will leave it to the Philippine National Police to determine the cause of the incident. She said they will not jump to conclusions so as not to preempt the investigation.
"In any case, we will not allow this incident to cow us into silence nor defer us from faithfully discharging our constitutional duty. We owe this to God and the Filipino people. Please pray for the safety of every man and woman in the Commission and for continued courage and integrity," she said.
The incident comes at the height of the investigation into the pork barrel scam involving businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles and several lawmakers.
The COA recently released a special audit report revealing that several lawmakers coursed their pork barrel funds, official named as Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) to bogus non-government organizations allegedly set up by Napoles.
Napoles is being accused of setting up these fake NGOs, in connivance with lawmakers, to pocket public funds.
