MANILA – United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday said that while the Philippines’ “great export” is its people, Filipinos should also find ways to contribute and serve the country.
“The Philippines needs you,” Clinton said during a forum organized by ABS-CBN at the University of Sto. Tomas in Manila.
Clinton told students in the forum that she had the opportunity to meet Filipinos around the world “who are doing everything, every kind of job, making every kind of contribution. We're so proud to have millions of Filipino-Americans”.
Around 3,000 Filipinos leave the Philippines daily for work overseas, according to government data. Migrant advocates have long been criticizing the government for its “labor export” policy.
“But I think this country also needs your educated approach and your commitment. That's what I've enjoy doing and what I feel strongly about and I’m just happy to be here with all of you,” she added.
Meanwhile, Clinton also gave a brief answer to a question about US immigration policies.
A viewer asked Clinton on when the US will change its immigration policies. The viewer, who posted his question online through abs-cbnNEWS.com, said that other countries like the Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Great Britain have been employing Filipinos through a skilled migration point system.
“We’re hoping that we can achieve comprehensive immigration reform, which is something that I feel strongly about,” she said.
She explained that she championed immigration reform as a senator and in her presidential campaign.
“We have so many priorities. I can’t even adequately describe what it was like coming into office eight years after the prior administration, when problems have been stacked up. It felt like there were thousands of planes circling in the air that we have to bring safely to a landing, and immigration reforms is one of those,” she said.
“We hope to get to comprehensive immigration reform and this issue will be part of the legislation that we introduced,” she said.
