A call center training program for Filipina domestics has been opened in Hong Kong by President Arroyo and acting Labor Secretary Marianito Roque, ABS-CBN reported.

Roque said the made arrangements for this center with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) even before leaving for Hong Kong last week.

He said under the program, participants would be given free 40 hour call center training courses which Pinay domestics in Hong Kong could take for two hours at a time on their days off.

There are over 120,000 domestics in Hong Kong and many of those have been at their jobs for decades now.

Domestics earn a minimum of over HK$3,000HK or P15,000.

But Roque, who is concurrently OWWA administrator, said the government is now making sure that these domestics can become call center employees and earn the same amounts when they come home to the Philippines.

"OWWA will help with training and DOLE (Department of Labor and Employment) with placement," Roque said.

He added that domestic helpers only have to be high school graduates to be able to participate in OWWA’s training program. OWWA will provide the training for free.

According to Roque, within the next week the consulate in Hong Kong will screen interested participants in the OWWA Call Center Training Program. With reports from Nadia Trinidad
