Filipino-American singer Sarah Marie Young is slowly gaining a following in the jazz music scene in Chicago.

In an interview, Young said her being a Filipino gives her a unique edge over other jazz singers in the area. “Being Filipino-American makes a difference. You're not tied to one certain genre,” said Young, adding that she also does country, R&B, funk, gospel, rock and pop.

Young was recently handpicked to perform as special guest in a series of shows with the Dan Cray Trio, Chicago’s widely known jazz band whose music has been featured on the hit television show “Gossip Girl.”

Her recent performance with the Trio at the Morse Theatre in Chicago turned first time viewers to instant fans.

“Her voice, her personality was just captivating,” said Young’s fan Meaghan Norman.

With only a handful of Filipino-American jazz artists in the US, Young's entry into the Chicago music scene is something Filipinos are proud of.

“Just really dynamite. The first thing is she's so comfortable. Just rhythmically she’s so strong,” said Tim Fitzgerald, professional jazz musician.

“There really aren’t any Filipino jazz singers that are in the mainstream so her like breaking down that barrier it’s amazing to be a part of it,” said Bobby Bosch New Chicago resident. Don Tagala, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau
