UNION CITY, California – Classmates and friends of a young Pinay who died in a tragic accident organized a vigil to celebrate her life.

“Shine for Shane” was the theme of the student-organized candlelight vigil held in front of the James Logan High School Center for Performing Arts.

Classmates of 18-year-old Shane Marcelino — who died a week earlier in a car crash after prom — invited Shane’s family and the community to be together to remember her, and show support for each other.

The location was a tribute for the musical talents Shane developed at an early age.

Grief counselors have been made available all week to Shane’s classmates and teachers.

“We’ve been able to provide a lot of support for our students and also for some our staff who knew Shane for a long time. We visited a lot of Shane’s classes to make sure we were there in class Monday morning when most students heard the news,” said Abhi Brar, principal of James Logan High.

Marcelino is the second student from the Class of 2017 to die from a car crash. The first was Izaiah Mease back in September. Both will be honored by the school at this year’s graduation.

“If there’s any silver lining in this tragedy it’s that this community, the school and the city of Union City, comes together to support, and comes together really fast, really quick, and comes together strong,” said Brar.

Marcelino’s mother suffered critical injuries in the crash but was released from the hospital on Friday.

According to her father, Albert Marcelino, police have yet to update him on any arrests regarding the accident.

A GoFundMe account set up to pay for Shane’s funeral and her mother’s medical costs have reached over $31,000 of the $50,000 goal.

Shane’s funeral has been arranged for this Saturday.
