The overseas placement sector called on the government to make serious its efforts to create safety nets for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who may be displaced due to the world economic turmoil.
Lito Soriano, executive director of Federated Association of Manpower Exporters (FAME), said the problems OFWs face on their return from assignment overseas can not be solved with lip service from a government that claims to make heroes of the OFWs.
“We want to see an action plan, a blue print on what the government shall do to make productive returning OFWs who are displaced because of the world economic crisis,” Soriano said in a press statement.
Soriano also cited the Bureau of Immigration’s (BI) move to encourage foreign investments to come to the country with the offer of permanent resident visa for foreigners who employ ten Filipinos in the country. “This move gives hope that the government is serious in bringing in foreign capital to create more jobs,” he said.
He said FAME written President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo suggesting that the BI new visa offer to foreigners who put up shop in the country and employ locals should cover foreign principals who hire Filipinos.
