MANILA - The House of Representatives justice committee is not keen on issuing a subpoena against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno as far as the impeachment proceedings are concerned.
Oriental Mindoro Rep. Rey Umali, the committee's chair, said the proceedings are running smoothly so far and resource persons have been able to shed light on the issues.
"'Yan po ay isang issue na hindi namin binibigyan ng halaga. Masalimuot kasi yan e. Ayaw nating magulo ang ating proceeding lalo't higit maganda na ang takbo," he said in an interview on radio DZMM.
Umali's statement came after Lorenzo "Larry" Gadon, the lawyer seeking the removal of Sereno, said he would ask congressmen to issue a subpoena against the Chief Justice.
In a forum held Monday in Quezon City, Gadon went as far as saying that he will request the lawmakers to arrest Sereno if she will not appear in her impeachment hearing.
Umali said they wish Sereno would be able to attend in the hearings but as far as the committee is concerned any request of subpoena from Gadon will not be tackled.
"Sinabi na namin na kung puwede ay manahimik na muna si Atty. Gadon para hayaan ang komite na magsagawa ng pagdinig para sa malinaw na katapusan ng impeachment proceeding," he said.
