MANILA – Vice President Leni Robredo on Friday reiterated it's not her wish to become president, amid allegations her political party is plotting the ouster of President Rodrigo Duterte.
"Parati ko iyon inuulit, before until now. Wala naman ako ganoong pangarap," Robredo told reporters when asked to respond to Senator Alan Peter Cayetano's comment that she was pursuing the presidency.
(I've said it again and again, before until now. I've no wish to become president.)
Robredo recently quit as Duterte’s housing secretary after being ordered by the president to “desist” from attending Cabinet meetings.
Days after Robredo’s resignation, Duterte said the Liberal Party, to which the vice-president belongs, is plotting his ouster.
In the wake of Robredo’s resignation, opposition politicians have been urging the vice-president to become the unifying voice of the political opposition.
Robredo said she is willing to lend a stronger voice to the administration’s policies which she opposes, and take on the role as opposition leader.
"Ako, iyong unifying the opposition, unifying the voices of dissent. Hindi ito opposition against the administration per se, pero opposition against certain policies of the administration that we do not agree with," she said.
The vice-president has been opposing some of Duterte’s key policies, such as the revival of the death penalty and the lowering of age of criminal responsibility.
She has also slammed the administration for allowing the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani and the unabated killings related to the war on drugs.
Despite clashing with Duterte on some policies, Robredo said she will continue to support the administration.
“Iyong sa akin lang, I want this administration to succeed. Pero for this administration to succeed, tingin ko mahalaga na pinapakinggan din nila iyong mga dissenting voices,” Robredo said.
Robredo also stressed that allegations that her party is out to remove Duterte from power is unfounded.
"Ako siguro kung may totoong 'Oust Duterte' plot, ngayon, bubuwelo na ako eh. Pero ngayon mismo sa aking partido, sabi ko na maging supportive pa tayo sa mga policies ng Pangulo na we agree with, mag-oppose lang tayo doon sa mga kontra tayo," she said.
"Tingin ko kasi, this administration has been in office for what, less than six months, parang hindi din maganda na nandoon na naman tayo sa may papatalsikin. Ang atin lang na pinakagusto pakinggan man lang tayo, kasi ngayon may pakiramdam na hindi tayo pinapakinggan." – report from Jorge Cariño, ABS-CBN news
