The Philippine National Police (PNP) has ordered a probe into the killing last Monday of activist priest Marcelito "Tito" Paez in Nueva Ecija.
The PNP said it is saddened by the death of Paez, who was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Jaen, Nueva Ecija.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Father Paez," PNP spokesperson Chief Supt. Dionardo Carlos said in a press briefing on Wednesday.
Carlos said Chief Supt. Amador Corpuz, the regional police director, was instructed to form a special investigation task group (SITG) to look into the case.
The group will be headed by Sr. Supt. Eliseo Tanding of the provincial police and will be assisted by regional investigators.
"The SITG will work 24/7 to resolve the case by arresting and prosecuting the suspects responsible for the killing of Father Paez," Carlos added.
