MANILA - Senator Leila de Lima on Wednesday said she will not be surprised if alleged drug trafficker Kerwin Espinosa tags her in his illegal dealings.
"Kung mangyayari iyan hindi na ako magugulat kasi ganoon ang ginagawa nila, fina-fabricate at nili-link ako sa drug trade," De Lima said.
The opposition lawmaker also believes that Espinosa, who is expected to arrive this week from the United Arab Emirates, will be offered immunity in exchange for his testimony against her at an ongoing Senate inquiry.
"Pababalikin siya dito at ise-secure s'ya at baka mag-offer na naman sila ng immunity so ako na naman ang ituturo niya," she said.
Espinosa is expected to testify at the Senate investigation on the death of his father, Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr., who allegedly fought policemen conducting a pre-dawn search operation in his jail cell in Leyte.
Before his death, the older Espinosa executed an affidavit naming De Lima as among 200 public officials who are allegedly in his son's payola.
Another son of the mayor has also claimed that De Lima received at least P8 million in drug payoffs.
SENATOR FIRES BACK
An incensed De Lima slammed the allegations and criticized the administration for making her the sole target of its war against supposed narco-politicians.
"Anong klaseng standards 'yan, anong klaseng mindset 'yan na since iyun ang gusto ng Pangulo, ginagawa nila lahat," she said.
She also refused to heed the resignation call of presidential legal counsel Salvador Panelo after she admitted a past relationship with her former driver, Ronnie Dayan.
"Wala pong pwedeng pumilit sa akin. Sila ang dapat magresign sa ginagawa nila," she shot back.
Dayan has been dubbed by no less than President Duterte as De Lima's bagman and alleged link to convicted drug lords when she was still Justice secretary.
Addressing the accusation against Dayan, the senator said, "Assuming lang na totoong may bagman, just assuming ang kasinungalingan nila, kailangan ba may ronantic relationship with a bagman? Anyone can be a bagman, anyone related to me, a friend, family."
