According to police, the driver of the jeepney, Bonyrick Verceles, asked permission from his passengers to get his license from his house which was a only a few meters from where he parked his jeepney.

"Ini-hand brake ko 'yung jeep. Ang mali ko nakalimutan kong patayin 'yung makina," Verceles said.

(I hand-braked the jeepney. My mistake was I forgot to turn of the engine.)

When Verceles left, the jeepney rolled backwards and fell to the ravine.

One of the passengers who died was identified as Henry Lucao, who jumped from the jeepney but was still run over by the vehicle.

The other casualty was identified as Rose Fakian.
